So It Starts.... Reading according to Russell
First, I have to say thank you for coming to my blog and taking the time to read my thoughts. I very much appreciate you taking the time.
Reading has always been a part of who I am. I cannot recall a time in my life where books did not play an important role. When I was little I used reading to learn - I have always wanted to be smarter than I am. In middle school, the worlds of fantasy and science fiction were my escape to get away from the teasing and bulling that all gay boys have had to deal with in same way or another. In high school, I developed my love for literature (thanks to my amazing English teachers at Serra High School - this is a shout out to Mr. Rice, Mrs. Gruber, Ms. Edwards, Mrs. Lewis, Ms. Gabay and Mrs. Shappee). In college, where I thought that Victorian Literature would be my passion, I discovered Modern American Fiction and fell in love with the authors that shaped the reader I am as an adult.
I certainly have a few ticks when I read. I DO NOT read digitally. I have a kindle and it sits nicely on my bookshelf- unused. I find when I read on a device I read too fast and do not recall very much. So, I stick to old fashion books with pages to flip and feel. Whenever I read I always have my book mark in the first 1/2 of the book until I reach the 50% mark and then it moves to the back. There is something about the act of moving the bookmark that gives me such joy. Don't ask -- I'm a book nerd. I will not fold a page in a book - I will not buy a used book with a folded page - and I will unfriend (thank you Facebook for making this a word) you if you fold any pages in a book I have lent you. So, please don't do it -- It hurts me inside.
I should let you know up front - I am a horrible speller. And I do not plan on really working hard to check that part of this blog. Also, for some reason, I am addicted to the - and the ...
Please forgive me. I am writing to you like a friend, and if you are my friend you will see this all the time.
I read a little bit of everything. So, you will see me reading a Barbara Pym novel followed by some YA dystopian thriller. My better half is a comic book reader (I'll call him Comic Nerd here) - so every once and awhile you will see some sort of graphic novel sneak its way into the mix. It took me 37 years to get to the point that I will stop reading a book that I am not enjoying. I am going to try to stay away from anything too negative on here, but it may sneak in every once and awhile.
I now realize this is a really long first entry... I hope it gives you and idea of who I am as a reader. Thanks for spending a bit of time with me.
